It's ridiculous that for over 20 years people living with HIV have been banned from entering the US simply because of a medical condition. Removing the ban is long overdue and we congratulate the US government on seeing economic and medical sense. THT and many others have campaigned against the ban since it was introduced. Blanket entry bans have no justification on public health grounds and only increase stigma. We hope other countries with similar bans in place will now remove them too.Over 20 years ago, this ban was put into effect out of fear and misinformation. Perhaps, this lifting of the ban is a signal that this country is finally getting its head on straight. Not allowing someone entry into this country due to an illness stigmatizes and labels that person, treating them like a terrorist's bomb. And, since we're a country whose big Lady Liberty extols:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!Unless, of course, you have a disease.
In strange and stupid news: The Huffington Post has reported today that a 73-year-old Colorado Department of Transportation forwarded an email to at least four of his co-workers depicting President Obama shining the shoes of Sarah Palin. Underneath the image, the man had written "It appears he [Obama] has found his niche." The employee will face disciplinary action ranging from a written reprimand to suspension, which will be decided at a meeting next week with CDOT personnel officials. Can I just say, "Eww!?" What year are we living in? Just this year, conservatives have depicted our elected President as a witch doctor, Hitler, and now a slave to a popular, white, conservative, Republican dilettante.
Progress and Regression in the same day. So, do you want to see the picture? Thought you would.
Love and Lyte,
