Episode 7: Inciting A Tolerant Riot

Episode 7 of Inciting A Riot: the podcast. Today's show is all about tolerance, its place in society and in paganism.

The word of the day is "tristful."

The social segment concerns where tolerance comes from, in-groups and out-groups, and how to teach our children to be tolerant of others.

The spiritual segment deals with pagans' intolerance of other pagans and the intolerance we have of other religions, specifically Christianity.

The song today is "I'm In Love With a Vampire" by Saving Jane. Search for their music through iTunes, and buy the songs! It's only $1.98!

The In Crowd. I'm not part of it. (Neither are you.)

This week's religion/spirituality topic is going to be tolerance. Rather, it is about how we're so intolerant of others: other religions, other practitioners of our own faith, and other people in general. Today, I'd like to start off by discussing why and how this intolerance occurs, and a possible remedy. This came from my senior thesis. Thoughts on the article should go to IncitingARiotPodcast@gmail.com. There are references in this article that are cited in my study, and if you'd like them I can pass them along for your research. I understand that the inclusion of these sources can make it a bit odd to read, as it is segmented from various parts of a thesis paper, but I hope you'll forgive that and look at the general content.

As previously mentioned in the study by Patterson from 2007, it seems that intolerances are “culturally transmitted.” Our culture is made up of all human influences: teachers, religious leaders, those in the media, friends, co-workers, family, et cetera. However, intolerance can be tempered with education. While many studies find various amounts of hate crimes committed for various reasons, one particular study done by Thomas Pettigrew of the University of California and Linda Tropp of Boston College found evidence to support a “contact hypothesis.” The basic idea behind the hypothesis is that if a person makes contact with individuals of an “outgroup, you're less likely to individuate them, to pay attention to individual characteristics, than when you meet members of your ingroup,” (Pettigrew, Tropp, 2001)

The problem with education is that it is “fostered by the parents” (Siegel, Welsh, and Senna, 2006 p. 275). That is to say that the values of the parents are passed on to their children. Also, in the same article, it is shown that “adolescents derive much of their identity from what happens to them in school,” (p. 275).

Since I have mentioned the terms in-group and out-group, they need to be defined. These are the academic definitions of such terms as defined for this research article.

Ingroup: members of a social group that feel superior to other social groups; mostly part of a majority group.

Outgroup: social group towards which an individual feels contempt, opposition, or a desire to compete.

Unlike grammar or math, there are no set rules to how one learns tolerance. Nobody has ever tried to figure out the best way to teach many children tolerance and responsibility in a classroom setting. It is known, though, that people in general learn tolerance and responsibility for themselves when constantly exposed to the ideas of equality, and the actual “outgroups” themselves (Pettigrew, Tropp, 2001). This is due to the fact that studies show that if children are exposed to what they are not used to, and taught that it is completely acceptable, then they will be far less likely to adopt intolerant biases and commit bias-based crimes later in life.

Basically, you are far less likely to be intolerant of a group you've not had first-hand, positive, constant contact with. Since there are an enormous number of groups, sub-groups, and niches that we've not come in contact with, it is only natural that we would have a certain amount of intolerance of out-groups.

To bring it back to a pagan perspective: you might be part of the out-group of paganism, but that doesn't mean you're not part of an in-group. The in-group of paganism is, what I like to call, the 'love and light' group. This group accepts everyone and everything, whether this person claims to be the reincarnation of Harry Potter or a genuine fae-turned-human fresh from the High Fairy Court. (I've had conversations with people claiming both. I was nauseous by the end and eyeing the exits with fervor.) This in-group HATES when someone calls one of the in-group out on their fantastical claims, making the questioner a part of the pagan out-group. I have no problem being part of this particular out-group, however. And, if you're a fan of this blog, you're part of it, too. Though, I think we're quickly becoming the in-group. The key here is to impose honesty, non-judgmental discussion, sound research, and CONTACT between the two groups. This will create a unified Pagan religion. Though we may not all practice the exact same thing, we will at least not fight amongst one another about who gets to wear the mantle of Pagan.

But, I might be wrong. Send me your thoughts on the matter.

Adventures in TurkeyLand

Yesterday was my first time making Thanksgiving dinner. Yesterday was the first time I've ever roasted anything, mashed anything, or otherwise truly made a family feast - Holiday style. I was excited and a little queasy, because if I messed this up...well, it would go down in family lore and we'd be having pizza for dinner. I couldn't have that. So I got my 11.2 pound turkey, opened it up, removed all the icky bits, and set to work seasoning it. I melted a stick of butter - I used real butter, because it's Thanksgiving and I felt I deserved it - and rubbed it all over the bird. I seasoned it with salt, pepper, lemon pepper, and chipotle seasoning. I also sprinkled a bit of parmesan cheese over the whole thing, just to give it a bit of a crunch. I stuffed it with orange and lime slices to keep it juicy. I placed celery stalks, carrots, and onions in the bottom of my roasting pan and set the turkey on top of it. I poured a Ginger Ale and water mix in the pan to help keep the bird moist. Just for good measure, I sprayed a bit of that sprayable butter all over it. It looked a little something like this.

You really have no idea how proud I was making that turkey. I popped it in my oven, set at 325, and let it cook for an hour to get golden. During this time I watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was a tradition I've had with my mother since time began. Also, because my mother was having a bit of separation anxiety (they're in Texas and I'm now in Illinois), we spent about a half hour or so on Skype. It was fun...sort of like spending Thanksgiving morning together. After an hour, I pulled this out of the oven for basting.

It was GOLDEN!!!!!! Again, the thrill I got was unreal. I started thinking, I might actually pull this off! I basted it with my brand new turkey baster, made an aluminum foil tent on top of it, and stuck it back in the oven for an hour and 15 minutes. During that time, I actually took a shower. (YEAH!!!!) We bought tickets online for New Moon so we could catch the 6 o'clock showing. I also polished off 3 cinnamon rolls. (YUM!!!) I took the aluminum foil of the bird, basted it, put it back into the oven and set to work on the rest of dinner. I made stuffing, potatoes, and green bean casserole. I had made the peanut butter pie the evening before. When the bird was finally done it looked like this.

IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Partner called it 'Incredible' and he never compliments my food. We put it all on the table and ate!

My plate looked like this.

YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then it was nap time, which is, potentially, the best part of Thanksgiving. Having a full belly, yummy food slowly injecting my body with tryptophan, and dozing off to the tune of family movies playing on Disney channel. Then, about 5, we headed off to the movie theater to see New Moon. I'm telling you, if nothing else, that movie made me 1000% more dedicated to hitting the gym. Can you say Taylor Lautner's ABS!!!!!!! (Is that boy legal yet?)

Today is black friday, and I'm resting up for the ridiculous dinner shift I'll be working. It usually takes me 15-20 minutes to get to work, but I'll leave a bit earlier just in case. I hope your Thanksgiving was just as wonderful as mine was. Now, though, I'm about to head into the kitchen and pick at the leftovers.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is the first Thanksgiving in the Inciting A Riot universe, and I want to pass along all the blessings and love and happiness that I possibly can at this special time of year. I'm getting my house decorated with Christmas decorations, and my oven is on and readying itself for the hours of work ahead of it today. This will be my first time cooking Thanksgiving dinner by myself, and I'm super excited about that!

There is so much to be thankful for, and it's important to focus on the good that has happened. It's really easy to look at the state of the economy, of healthcare, of civil rights, of war, of public opinion and not find the good in it. If you're alive. If you're in good health. If you have family/friends/loved ones that you stay in touch with. If you have a good self-image. If you have enough money to put food on your table. These are the important things. Count the small blessings so that, in time, you can just add to their number instead of having to go look for them in times of need. You'll know exactly where they are and what they are.

In short: BLESS YOU and BLESSED BE!

I'm in LOVE *swoon* New Left Media

This goes beyond the realm of Jaguar inductee. There should be a new category of amazing awesomeness that this man ascribes to. I could easily see him, with a bit more experience and hard work, being the next Anderson Cooper. His name is Chase Whiteside and he's the interviewer for New Left Media - my new favorite YouTube channel.

Their latest video is below. Go to YouTube, click subscribe, and enjoy! They don't have many videos up now, but I think they're about to be a HUGE deal!!!! Video below of their latest interview at a Sarah Palin book signing. However, they also have excellent videos interviewing Tea Party attendees, and they covered the No On One campaign in Maine.

Episode 6: Inciting A Sexy Riot

Episode 6 of Inciting A Riot: the Podcast! Today's riot is a sexy one as my guest co-host, Lacy Eylar, and I talk about sex in society, sex in paganism, sex in the news, and sex in poetry.

The news articles concern Shaniya Davis, a 5-year-old girl sold as a sex slave, and the magazine Sex, etc. in public libraries.

The word of the day is "pedantic."

The social issue is Sex!

The poem is "Water. Babies."

In the spirituality segment, we look at sex in paganism and whether it's just being used as an excuse to have orgies in the woods.

Check out Lacy Eylar's blog at LacyEylar.blogspot.com!

Even more fluff bunny than usual!

So I click over to the Llewellyn site this morning, because I like their Spell-A-Day section. Sometimes there's some interesting little meditations and such that I can use as a basis for a creation of my own. Today's addition, however is this:

Yep, a Peace on Earth Spell. Want to end terrorism, hunger, starvation, rivalry, greed, war, hatred, and all those other deadly sins? Just light a couple of candles and think happy thoughts about the world. I'm sorry; I'm all for believing in the metaphysical and that mystical actions can get around the mundane, but to think you're actually going to create world peace...with three candles, some yarn, and a couple of Tarot cards....?

Epic fail. Good try though. But...let's get this guy fired, please. He's making my sense of reality cringe.

Islam Is Not A Religion..........................say what?

On the November 19th Rachel Maddow show, she took a look at various conservatives and religious right leaders who've decided, yet again this decade, that we should target Muslims! This time Pat Robertson of the 700 club said that Islam is "not a religion" and that it's a "violent political system bent on the overthrow of governments and world domination."

All of this, of course, comes in the fall out of the Fort Hood shooting that took place on November 5th. To digress a moment, it's becoming rather clear that American politics, both on the left and the right, is turning away from the middle. Republicans, in order to garner a crowd and get elected, feel they have to rile up their core base, and that means pandering to the extremists from time to time. Likewise, Democrats - who aren't getting any help from the Republicans when it comes to passing healthcare - are beginning to pander to core Democratic groups. Doing so makes both parties' candidates difficult to get through a general election these days, because they can't get votes from the other side. Given that, let's go back to the Right getting really, really chummy with racist bigots.

US Representative Don Manzullo says of Muslims in general, "These are really, really mean people that are driven by some savage religion." Though, later on, he attempted to backtrack and say that not all Islamic people are....umm...savage. Just some. See the video below for more in-depth review of the topic, but suffice it to say that big named Conservatives are turning Islam into some sort of evil religion that simply seeks to kill everyone they don't like and that doesn't happen to already be Muslim. That's kind of ironic, since the meaning of Islam is "Peace acquired by submission to the will of God." Yep, it's all about the killing!

This is a Christian nation. Sorry, I know you don't want to hear it, but it is. And, in this wonderful nation of ours, we tend to not care about studying other religions, as most don't feel we need to know. So, we learn about other cultures from the news, from our churches (which is the worst place to learn about a religion that isn't yours), from our politicians, and from other sources other than the horse's mouth. Because of that we get this awful misinformation. While it's not the religion of choice for me, Islam turns out to be a HECK of a lot like Christianity. It has a prophet, a holy book, a set of tenets, do's and don'ts, beautiful scriptures of peace, and scriptures that I'm sure most of them aren't so proud of - just like the Christians and the inconvenient verses that talk about how evil women are and the like.

The point: LEARN ABOUT OTHER FRIGGIN RELIGIONS OTHER THAN YOUR OWN!

Feedback! Gimme Some!

Hey everyone! I'm getting ready for a big show for Episode 6. My guest and I will be recording the show this Tuesday, so you only have a few more days to wait!

I wanted to go ahead and get some feedback, just so I make sure to cover all aspects of this topic you'd like to hear. What is the topic? Gosh, you're so ahead of the curve! SEX! Yep, dirty, stinky, sweaty sex. That's what we'll be rioting about come this next Tuesday. We're going to be talking about sex in the news, sex in society, and sex in paganism. The big points I'll definitely be talking about in the main topic are:

  • Why is sex in paganism?
  • What is its functional purpose, if any, in ritual?
  • What are the rules governing sex in covens, groups, and craft?
  • Pagan festivals and the dirty stuff that goes on around the firepits.
  • What about sex should and shouldn't we share with our children, and at what age?
If you have anything to add to this discussion, or you'd like to suggest a different angle, write me at IncitingARiotPodcast@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!

Jaguar Inductee: Trevor Donovan

This disgustingly gorgeous Hot Ness Monster is named Trevor Donovan. Apparently, he's an actor, but I've never seen him on anything. He's on things like 90210, and he's been a presenter at the Oscars...so...you know, he's been to the Oscars.

Ok, I know. Usually, these Jaguar inductees have some substance to them. They're smart or accomplished or respected in their field. They've got brains to go with their ridiculous brawn.

But...Oooh pretty! And, hey, he's 31! So...he's...umm..............

Did I already mention 'ooh pretty?' I did? Oh well. Hey, I'm trying to make up for the depressing news this week! Just enjoy! (damn it!)

Utterly Senseless

How I missed these stories this week, I'll never know, but here they are. Despite that, I want you to know these two stories are not pleasant, and are not easy to stomach. I present them to you so that we can collectively acknowledge their existence, the problem, and pray for change and the peace of their spirits.

Shaniya Davis: A little, 5-year-old girl named Shaniya Davis went missing on November 10th. A frantic phone call to the police by her mother started a search that, long story short, ended in the finding of this girl's body on Monday of this week. In between that time, it has been found out that her mother had sold her as a sex slave to a man named Mario McNeill. McNeill took his slave to a hotel room, where the two were recognized by a staff member who then called police. By the time police arrived, the man and the girl were gone. The body was, as I said, found on Monday after she was raped and choked to death. McNeill was officially charged yesterday with First Degree Murder and First Degree Rape of a Child by North Carolina prosecutors. The biological mother, Antoinette Davis, is in custody and has been charged with Child Trafficking and Child Abuse Involving Prostitution. Davis' biological father and step-mother are utterly distraught, yet have said they pray for these people for they know not what they do. (Echoing the statement Jesus said in the Bible as he was hung on the cross.) It goes without saying that this little girl is utterly precious, and I hope you join with me in sending her family the brightest and highest blessings. I know in my heart of hearts this girl has joined with the Mother Goddess in the happiest of afterlives.

Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado: 19-year-old Jorge Mercado was murdered on November 13th. I'm sorry, that's not quite accurate. Mercado was beaten, dismembered, beheaded, and burned on the night of November 13th in Cayey, Puerto Rico. His alleged murderer was caught and claimed gay panic as his motivation for this most brutal of killings. Gay panic basically states that the defendant was temporarily insane, because they're just so immensely disgusted by being near a gay or transgender person. It has been successfully used many times, sadly enough. The original investigator in the case said, "These types of people, when they enter this lifestyle and go out into the streets know that this could happen." This statement has been condemned by others, but not, yet, by this officer. This is a hate crime, though will most likely not be charged as such as no crime in Puerto Rico has ever been charged as a hate crime. Even though this beautiful man had his arms and legs and torso torn from his body, even though he was burned and decapitated, that man, I'm am wholly confident, is being embraced by the Great Father and Mother into an afterlife without pain.

Let us remember their names and faces and take up the cause of NEVER AGAIN!

Bless you and Blessed Be!

Pray for Obama and His Quick Death

Politics and religion have always, without exception, been a bad mixture. Since President Obama took office we've seen a surge in Christian extremist thought with people bringing guns to his speeches and holding signs claiming his blood should be used to water the tree of liberty. Well, now it seems that the same Christian Right groups are wanting us all to pray for our President. Specifically, they'd like us to pray using the Biblical verse Psalms 109:8.

Right now you can get all kinds of items with the slogan "Pray for Obama Psalm 109:8." Teddy bears, BBQ aprons, mugs...you can get this phrase on all of them. So...what's Psalm 109:8? Good question!

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

Oh yes...and let's not stop there! Take a look at what the following verses - aka the verse immediately following that one - have to say!

Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Now, isn't that just a lovely sentiment? Yes, let's pray for Obama!

PEOPLE! WAKE UP!!! Sure, the majority of people that receive the message from the onslaught of media attention about this won't actually do anything about it, but it just takes one unhinged individual to believe they're doing God's work to cause great harm. I mean, the aforementioned man's message of watering the tree of liberty was the same one worn by a man named Timothy McVeigh when he blew up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, OK. All sorts of conservative talking heads have railed against George Tiller, saying in no uncertain terms that things would be better without him and calling him "Tiller the Baby Killer." Then, some unhinged idiot killed him in cold blood. So, when conservative media outlets online and on television talk about praying for Obama using Psalm 109:8-9, I hope that when some idiot takes it upon themselves to 'do God's work," that we'll remember everybody who perpetuated this idea and hold them to some sort of accountability.

They're culpable. They're the ones filling the heads of Americans with dangerous tripe, and it just takes one McVeigh, one Scott Roeder to try to put a bullet through our beloved President. This is the difference between Christianity, most Christians, and religious extremists.

Music that's caught my attention:

A couple of songs are creeping themselves right into my gray matter as of late, and I thought I'd quickly share them with you.

Two Is Better Than One is a song by the band Boys Like Girls, and it features a little girl named Taylor Swift. It's one of my newer findings....Enjoy.

Another song tickles my spiritual side just a little bit. Shakira's new song Gypsy is just a bunch of acoustic, divine goodness. Obviously, it's not pagan music, but its theme is pagan-adjacent. Enjoy!

If you know of any music I should be listening to, let me know!

Witches: the Biography special (Review)

Okay, so last night the Biography channel had a re-run of their special concerning Witches. I had been really anticipating this show, as it originally came out last year and I never got to see it. It comes out on re-runs every now and then, I found out from the blog Lizzie's Logic, and it came on again last night.

I'm going to be as fair as possible in this review, but you all know my views on media's take on paganism...

The Good: Most of what the narrator said was quite accurate in its representation of the basic understanding of earth-based spirituality and modern paganism. The show made the point that pagans/witches could be your doctor, lawyer, teacher, and neighbor. Even though the historical information was quite brief, it was excellent in its attempt to show that people that were tried for witchcraft were only charged due to political or social motives rather than actually practicing witchcraft. Oh, and they stressed that WE DON'T FRIGGIN WORSHIP THE DEVIL! (Yeah!!!) Also, the last segment, in which they talked to Roberta Stewart moved me deeply. She's the wife of fallen soldier Sgt. Patrick Stewart who fought to have the pentacle put on her husband's gravestone.

The Bad: However, for being a Biography channel special, I was hoping for a little more in-depth information than the basic info you find in the first chapter of every single 101 text. Perhaps they could extend this show to be a series and go a bit more in-depth into each of the topics they presented. But...my biggest beef with the movie...the thing that quite literally made me a bit sick to my stomach...was the inclusion of LAURIE CABOT and SILVER (FUCKING) RAVENWOLF!!! Pardon the language. I was just so incensed by this. Cabot got on screen with her frizzy black hair, mountains of black robes, and Flava Flav sized pentacle and told the cameras she didn't appreciate the visual stereotypes of witches in the media. As she sat there in her billowing black robes with a spiral tattoo on her left cheek and glasses the size of pie plates.

She is THE bad stereotype of modern witches. She is the face that the media seeks out to put on television, because she looks like what pop culture thinks 'real' witches look like. I mean, really, she said the Goddess required us all to take vows that we would wear black robes and 'the pentacle' at all times. I have never in my life, except when graduating from something, worn a friggin black robe, and my one pentacle was small and meant to be more of a personal symbol than something to flash around for the masses. (though, I don't wear it anymore...more out of a desire for different jewelry) And, really, she knew she was going to be on television. If she didn't want to perpetuate a stereotype of silliness and institute an idea that this religion is legitimate, she should have dispensed with the 5 people in fairy wings and glitter crowns in the depiction of her coven's Imbolc celebration.

Also, every pagan that I know cannot stand Silver Ravenwolf. (Or Technicolor Sparrowbear, as my friend Beth would call her) I have no idea what world Silver is living in, but it has nothing to do with a little thing called reality. Click here for an excellent article on the problem of Silver Ravenwolf. Yet another woman who is perpetuating the exact stereotype she claims to be trying to overturn.

Couldn't they have gotten some nice, normal, well-spoken individuals on screen? Of course not. They have to go for the most visually and aurally sensational subjects they can find.

This, however, shouldn't deter one from hearing the information presented. What is said is, most of the time, wonderful information. (Except for the fluffy bunny garbage espoused by Cabot and Sparrowbear.) I cannot wait for the TV special in the mythical future that will grab a bunch of normal folks that are, surprise, also pagan. Dare to dream....

What did you think about the show?

Your Name Does Not Mean Princess!

There's a girl that I work with whose first name is Alydar. She goes by Aly (like Alley). I asked what the origin of her name was, because she just seemed like a regular, white bread American girl. She said it was Israeli and that her name meant "God's Princess." I kind of giggled, because a girl sat in my section the night previous and had divulged that her name (something even more generic like Samantha or Rebecca...something....) also meant "God's Princess." Both of these girls said that their parents had purchased those little pieces of paper telling the origin of each of their respective girls' names. Funny thing, I've heard a whole bunch of girls over the course of my life saying that their name means something akin to "God's Princess" or "God's Chosen Princess" or some other favor bestowed by the Hebrew God onto these girls.

Likewise, a host of boys have been told their name mean's "God's Champion" or "God's Hero." My parents named me a name they believe means "God's Champion." Well, in reality, while my first name is Hebraic in origin, it is a question meaning, "Who is like God?" (Which is hilarious to me now, because I rather doubt I'm like the Hebrew God, Yahweh, at all...)

The point is that not everybody can be God's Princess. Your name might, instead, come from a word meaning 'grass' or 'the way the wind is." That's ok, because at the end of the day the true definition of your name is whoever you are.

But, if you ever try to suggest to that girl that she might not have a name giving her the most auspicious title of royalty in God's holy palace, you will meet a swift defense. Because, of course, the man who sold her a piece of paper for $30 telling her she was God's Special Chosen Baby Princess would never lie. He's not turning a profit... He's spreading the word, the proclamation, that she has been named royalty.

What does your name mean, and how much did you pay for it?

Episode 5: Inciting A Revealing Riot

Episode 5 of Inciting A Riot: the Podcast!!! Today deals with tough-to-swallow history concerning the modern evolution of paganism as created by a woman named Margaret Murray.

The news articles deal with a recent article published on the Wild Hunt concerning Christian license plates and American Big Business fighting to keep slavery alive.

The word of the day is "perspicuous."

The poem is "Picking."

In the main topic we look at Margaret Murray and how she helped to ingrain the incorrect theories of the Burning Times, the Old Religion, and a host of other supposed pagan history into pop culture.

Umm... Yeah... I won't even comment on this.

Boys in Balloons, Beauty Queen Tantrums, and Spiritual Dog Walks

I'm pretty sure everyone loves a good hoax. To me, they're in the same vein as haunted houses. Once you fully get that it was all a prank you can laugh at how worked up you got, and you've now got a really good story to tell. The best hoaxes are typically played on April Fool's Day (such as the Spaghetti Harvest or when Alabama changed the value of Pi). Except when it involves a young boy, a weather balloon, and thousands of dollars worth of taxpayer money.

Balloon Boy! (aka Falcon Heene) If you've been living under a rock, then you don't know that the Heene family are absolutely desperate to become some sort of famous reality stars and were hoping to garner enough fame to snowball into a reality show of their very own by pretending their son, Falcon, had been trapped in a homemade weather balloon that flew 40 miles away. The boy was found sitting in the rafters of their garage, which was only possible to do if an adult put him there. Furthermore, he outed the parents on CNN when he said, "I thought we did this for the show." It seems the Heene's will not be escaping the long arm of the law, that is pretty freaking pissed at having wasted all of that time and resources to increase their fame, as Daddy Heene just plead guilty to influencing a public servant and Mommy Heene plead guilty to false reporting to authorities. (a felony and a misdemeanor, respectively) Originally, they were going to be charged with crimes whose sentences could have landed them in jail up to 6 years - contributing to the delinquency of a minor, etc.

Thank God!

I'm so glad these famewhoring idiots didn't try to fight this. There was no excuse for what they did, and they should definitely have to pay for that ridiculous stunt. Unfortunately, all they're getting is probation. Maybe Scott Roeder should take a cue from the Heene's and not even try to fight the system.

In funnier news: Miss I Hate Gays USA Carrie Prejean stormed out of Larry King last night, because, she says, he was being inappropriate...by asking her questions....about the reason she was there. :::eye roll::: I'm sorry, but doesn't this girl realize how to remain famous? Video below.

I'm kind of hoping that Carrie Prejean is a hoax as well.

I'm going to take my dog for a walk (as soon as I go exchange her coat at Old Navy for the proper size...yes I buy my dog clothes). This is one of the most spiritual times of my day. The weather isn't alway nice enough to walk a dog here in the arctic north, but today the sun is out and the wind isn't so bad. This is my meditation time. This is where I connect to the divine. Some of my most profound Ah Ha! moments have come from these dog walks. Oddly enough, one of my few transcendental experiences happened a few weeks ago on this dog walk.

Now, mind you, this is the kind of thing that I'm really skeptical about when other people say it, but I was listening to the Kellianna song I Walk With the Goddess, singing along, and suddenly I was part of the wind and sunshine. There's really no other way to say it. A great wind swelled up behind me, and I felt as though something were about to happen, so I put out my arms and just let it. And for a moment that lasted an eternity...I was the wind. I was sunshine. I was not in my legs or my arms, but it was just for a moment...that was utterly eternal.

Head out there with your pooch. I'm not saying that every outing will end up in flying with the breeze, but it's a great way to find some meditation time.

Killing is now a necessity? (And my thoughts on the death penalty)

Scott Roeder, the murderer of Dr. George Tiller, called the associated press Monday to confess to the murder of Dr. Tiller. Yep, he just called 'em up and said "I did it!" Again, I would just like to remind you all of how open-and-shut this case really should be. He's attempted to sell items on eBay depicting his murder of Dr. Tiller that he autographed in order to fund his legal defense team. He's become the poster child for his sick little fringe group of right-wing, ultraconservative nut jobs that feel his crime should gain him sainthood. (Literally!) And now he's confessing to the crime.

And the state STILL won't give him the death penalty!

What does this man have to do? Say that the murder of George Tiller was a necessity and had to be done? Oh wait... HE DID THAT! In his phone call to the AP, Roeder claimed that he would be using some fictitious "necessity defense," stating that it was a necessity to kill Dr. Tiller in order to protect unborn children. Because, really, this medically licensed doctor was going around in the middle of the night breaking in to people's houses and aborting babies against the mother's will. That's what he must be doing in order to garner such a defense. Except, that would be in the land of conservative fairy tales. In what the rest of us like to call the real world, Scott Roeder is a sick, twisted individual who isn't worth the tax dollars it would take to keep this man around.

Thankfully, his legal team has said that after exploring the possibility, they will not be using the "necessity defense" in court. But...they explored the possibility... :::sigh::: Roeder is now trying to drum up support so he can afford an attorney who will try this defense in court. (Vomit)

I am not a fan of the death penalty. Really, I'm not. A punishment that is 100% should only ever be used in a case which we know the defendant is 100% guilty. We very rarely ever know if a person is 100% guilty. The system has been shown time and time again to be wrong. We have executed hundreds of innocent men, and I would love to see the entire death penalty done away with. But, in this case, we have 100% certainty. The man confessed, and is actually touting his crime in the media and online as though he were proud. There was an entire church full of people that saw Roeder shoot Dr. Tiller at point blank range. We know this man's guilt for certain, and I'm sorry if you disagree with me, but in this instance I cannot fathom giving him life when all he doled out was death.

Let me know what you think. If I get enough responses, there may be a segment on an upcoming podcast devoted to this topic in a Sociology segment I'm creating. So get those responses in to IncitingARiotPodcast@gmail.com.

Legislating Abortion via Healthcare Reform

Healthcare reform is on the verge of being passed. In fact, it has passed several House sub-committees and is on its way to being voted on by the Senate. But, in a surprise twist this past weekend, the bill that has come out of its passing by the House had, attached to it, a piece of legislation put together and endorsed by Bart Stupak - a Democrat from Michigan - that would effectively turn back the clock on women's rights by decades. The Stupak Amendment would remove abortion coverage from the public option.

That was a really short, simple sentence for an action with such far-reaching implications. Here's the thing. If a woman wants to have an abortion, some insurance will cover that legal, medical procedure. The new public option would allow Americans the opportunity to change insurance companies once a year, should they become unhappy with their current coverage. This creates competition and would quickly drive the price of insurance down to an affordable level. Good thing.

Bad thing: Private plans would be prohibited from extending coverage for abortion procedures if they take in patients who get government subsidies. If you make less than $88,000 a year, then you get government subsidies for your insurance. So if this version of the Healthcare Reform Bill passes, then you can't even buy private insurance that includes abortion coverage if you want to. If you want to opt-in to that cheaper insurance, the insurance you would get through the public option, and you happen to want reproductive health coverage, then you're out of luck. Philip Klein summed it up best in the American Spectator:

Currently, women are able to purchase private health care plans that cover abortion because it remains a legal procedure and we still have a private market for the sale of health insurance. But if the House Democratic health care bill becomes law, individuals will only be allowed to purchase health insurance through a government-run exchange. And because millions of Americans will be using government subsidies to purchase insurance through the exchange, suddenly lawmakers get to have a say on what kind of private insurance policies individuals can purchase.

President Obama has already come out against this attachment stating, "This is a healthcare bill, not an abortion bill." However, in September he made the statement that "no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions." With this language it is difficult to learn which version of the bill will be endorsed by Obama. Granted, his anti-Stupak statements came out today, while the others are 2 months old. But, can someone's intrinsic views of abortion, and the government's ability to legislate that choice, really be changed in a month and a half? No. That's a ludicrous fantasy. While my personal views on abortion lean more on the conservative end, I am completely pro-choice. I don't have a vagina and don't feel I can ever tell someone who has one what they can do with it. Nor should our government.

You are not a tool and you've read The Secret way too many times.

I think most of us had, at one point or another, this image about what spell crafting would be. It would involve tapping into arcane powers using earthen tools, colored stones, and bundles of dried herbs – that, of course, came from a witchy garden planted in a clear full moon night. I think most of us now realize that idea was bunk.

We live in a world of cars that run on electricity, technology that is obsolete within 6 months, and the ability to know absolutely anything you could possibly spell semi-correctly into Google search instantly. The Internet connects billions of people everyday to images, icons, documents, and ideas that were once limited to a small subset of a population on a different continent in a time nearly forgotten – until the advent of Wikipedia. A person hearing about paganism and spellcraft in the morning can become an expert in the subject by dinnertime, or, at least, can know enough to believe they are an expert. It is in this age of exponential knowledge growth and expansion that we have forgotten a few of the simple things: tools.

Any good bookstore pagan can tell you that there are certain tools that are considered traditional craft tools. Among these would be items like a wand, an athame, a cauldron, a cup, and a pentacle. If you’ve got a bit more money, or just have a collector’s spirit, you might also add a boline, a bell, a besom, a crystal ball, a mirror, a cord, a censer, and whatever else happens to be on sale at your local McWiccan shop. The craft is full of a nearly endless supply of fun, interesting, bizarre items to perform magic with, and it’s fun to buy them and salivate over other tools not yet purchased.

However, are these tools really necessary? With the more we learn, at this exponential rate of learning, and the more we continue marrying more traditional craft with new age or world spirituality, aren’t we being taught that all of the power comes from us, anyways? We don’t need the more traditional tools of the craft, and if you’d like them, just imagine that you have them. Don’t have an athame to direct energy? That’s ok, close your eyes and imagine that you have a gorgeous, jewel-encrusted blade that is directing bright blue flames around you in concentric circles to create your sacred space. You are your own endless source of energy and magic, and you don’t need those silly tools. Again, I say bunk!

In this ideation, our personal power – that which each person naturally has – is so great that it can perform any magical feat you set your mind to. You don’t need a traditional altar set up, because you have the power of a “witch’s thought.” (You’ve heard this one. “A witch’s thoughts have power.” That’s very true, for the most part. I don’t think that it has anything to do with the fact that witch’s thoughts are more powerful, but I think all thoughts have power, whether that person realizes it or not. But, back to tools…) With your witchy thoughts you can imagine a sacred space, imagine an altar set up, and imagine that you’re using the tools on that altar to create your spells. Hey, while you’re at it, can you imagine me a cheeseburger? Because, we could be here a while.

Mmm... That's better.

If you go back, way back, to magic from eons past, you’ll find that people were trying to connect to something greater than themselves. They were petitioning their Gods, the Earth, the mysterious Flame that shot up when the heavens struck wood, to help their hunt or their harvest or their home (or whatever). They recognized that they were so small in the grand scheme, and, if they wanted change to occur, they would have to tap in to energies beyond that which are provided by their body.

As witches, we say that we use the powers of the elements, of the Earth, to create magic. If this is true, then we need tools. No, we don’t need the jewel-encrusted dagger or the $350 crystal ball barely big enough to hold, but we do need a connection to the Earth. It is important in this world of instantaneous knowledge that we not become disconnected from the basics in our craft as well. No, you don't need the witchy garden or the bundles of sweet-smelling herbs or the full altar with the candles and oils and things with handles in different colors. You don't need a wooden wand and jeweled wand and a curved knife and a black knife......gosh I'm getting winded just writing all that.

The point: If you can carry out every page of your BOS without ever picking up an athame or throwing together some herbs, then all the power to you - literally. Because...you know...you must have a ton of power. (that joke got lost in there somewhere...) We are drawing on the energies of the world and, by extension, the very universe to enact change in our lives. If we had all the power to do so just with our thoughts, then...you know...a whole heck of a bunch of people would have won the lottery or slept with Brad Pitt (or Angelina Jolie if that's your thing, but, really...eww) just by thinking about it.

Mass Shooting at Fort Hood

Yesterday, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army Psychiatrist, opened fire without warning at the Soldier Readiness Center in Fort Hood, Texas. As of 7:09am it was reported that 13 people are confirmed dead and 28 more are injured and in stable condition. It was reported that Hasan shouted out "Allahu Akbar!" (God is great) immediately before opening fire. This is a phrase that has been shouted from the rooftops by Iranian rioters in praise of overthrowing their corrupt government.

An ABC news report I watched from Chris Cuomo this morning stated that Hasan didn't necessarily have a target, but that it appeared the man aimed to kill. The big question that, obviously, hasn't been answered in less than 24 hours is 'Why?'. This man gave no warning, nor does it seem there was any clear motive.

Speculation at this point amounts to an amalgamation of feelings Hasan had about being ridiculed by his fellow officers for his Palestinian heritage (being called Camel Jockey by his fellow soldiers) along with his trepidation over being deployed. With horror stories coming in daily from Iraq and Afghanistan about the realities of war, it is very likely that this man's psyche just snapped out of fear and frustration.

However it happened, it has left 12 dead. I would like to have a moment to remember these people that lost their lives. May their spirits be blessed. It should never be forgotten in the media whirl of celebrity feuds and beautiful people doing outrageous things that we are in a war. Whether the war is right to be in, at this point, is so far beside the point as to be laughable. We're in it, and the most progressive estimates are that we won't be out of that area for at least another year, with more conservative estimates ranging in the realm of several years. Possibly, truly, never. Pray for peace and sanity in this disgusting assault on humanity that happens when people go to war with one another.

Defeat and a little Victory

Last night there was a win for civil liberties in Washington state as they voted to allow civil unions. However, in Maine, we lost the battle for civil liberties as the people came out and voted in one of the closest races in that state's recent history to disallow gay marriage from occurring.

Without beating you over the head with the opinion you all know I have, I would just like to say I find it sad that with all of the world's problems today, that this issue is even an issue. We're dealing with poverty and starvation and genocidal governments and hatred and fear and what issues do voters continue to beat down the polls to actually stop? The rights of their fellow citizens. This is a bittersweet day.

I look forward to the day when this is a distant mark on history, and our children can forgive us our ignorance.

On a crazier note: I'm #21 on iTunes! I was scrolling down the section of the Religion & Spirituality: other category and noticed... Hey! That's my show! Look!

Thank you all! Remember to head over and vote, rate, and leave a comment as that keeps the show bumped up in the numbers over there. Bless you for that.

Fox News says it's not NEWS!

I wish I could take credit for bringing this to you first, but if you're a fan at all of Jon Stewart - which you should be - then you've already seen this video. It's 11 minutes long, so hang tight. Basically, the gist is that in a recent statement made by Fox News execs on Fox News programming stated that out of the 24 hours a day of scheduled shows, only 9 hours of it is devoted to reporting actual news. Which means that roughly 63% of their programming is not considered news. All of their biggest drawing shows - Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Greta Van Susteren, etc. - are NOT news. (Claim Fox) So, if the majority of their programming isn't news, and that's what the White House is saying is true, then what is Fox News griping about?

They say that their news programming hours run from 9am-4pm and from 6pm-8pm. That's it. All those other shows, according to Fox, are NOT NEWS!!!!!! You heard it from the horse's err... fox's mouth. (pardon the pun) For the rest, please watch the hilarious video, found below.

Junk food makes you stupid

Your mother told you. Your trainer told you. Your coach in high school told you. But you never listened, and, until now, there was really no motivation to do so. However, what would you say to a study from Oxford University that was recently released suggesting that junk food is both "as addictive as drugs" and making you stupid?

The study was performed on rats, of course, and showed that a high fat diet - even over short periods of time - can actually slow the brain processes and markedly decline your cognitive ability. Summed up: it makes you dumb.

Dr Alan Maryon-David, president of the UK Faculty of Public Health, added the following:
A high-fat diet sends a message to the brain that it's a time of plenty, so the neurotransmitters – brain chemicals – tell us that we don't have to be quite so frenetic about finding food. Our huntergatherer instinct is switched off, or at least put on hold....

Furthermore, Professor Kieran Clarke, head of the research team stated:
It shows that high-fat feeding even over short periods of time can markedly affect mind and body. The rat intake translates to a diet of about 3,000 calories a day. Something like going to McDonald's every day for lunch would probably do it. If you have a heavy weekend of excess, it's probably a good idea to make up for it with a healthier few days.
Now my report cards make sense! The dollar menu is responsible for the fact that I couldn't make good enough grades. Something else that I can blame for my inability to perform! In that sense, I find it rather humorous that a European university would come out with findings such as this. It is a very American sentiment to find a scapegoat for all the problems we deal with. Can't lose weight? It's genetic. Take this pill. Can't make enough money? It's the government's fault. Stage a protest. Can't make good grades? It's fast food. Boycott McDonald's.

Except on days that end in 'Y'.

Will there come a day when we are responsible for the choices we make? Maybe it's not so much the bad food as the vast quantities of it we insist on eating on a daily basis. Just a thought.

Fire Lyte
